Sunset Hill House Creates Adaptive Gardening Program

The partnership with Adaptive Sports Partners of the North Country began in early October, with the Sunset Hill Golf Course welcoming local adaptive golfers on a weekly basis. (see photo attached) The program will continue throughout the winter, with the inn regularly hosting both cross country skiers and snowshoers. The inn will also be the site of a training event for the group on January 7th.

Adaptive Sports Partners provide year-round opportunities in sports and recreation for people with physical or developmental disabilities, and has a goal to enhance the personal development and self-esteem of participants, and to provide them with an opportunity to take risks in a safe and supportive environment. This program is unique as it is very global in outlook, welcoming wounded veterans, special needs students, people from local service agencies such as Common Ground, sports enthusiasts who have become disabled through accident or illness and students working to attend the Special Olympics.

Sunset Hill will begin its partnership Bretton Woods Adaptive with a fundraising dinner on November 14th . This will also serve to welcome the program’s new director Tom Trevithick as well as the inn’s new executive chef Steven Wells. 150 guests will enjoy tastes of the new menus paired with handpicked wines from the inn’s award winning wine list, while having a chance to get to know both Mr Trevithick and Chef Wells. Sunset Hill will also host the Bretton Woods Adaptive board meeting, and is planning a scotch tasting to benefit the program in February, in conjunction with noted local authority Nigel Manley.

Tom Trevithick has worked in the ski industry for over 15 years as an Alpine and adaptive trainer. For the past six years, he has served as the assistant director of the Adaptive Sports Foundation.

The Bretton Woods Adaptive program is a private non-profit organization associated with Disabled Sports USA. Its objective is to provide education and support to individuals, empowering them to achieve independence and reach their athletic potential in their chosen sport.

Community service is a hallmark of Sunset Hill House and Sunset Hill Golf Course under the ownership of Lon and Nancy Henderson. In addition to these new partnerships, they historically donate more than $10,000 annually to local and national charities, have been awarded the National Restaurant Association Good Neighbor Award, and have been earned a gold leaf for their ongoing community support and leadership by the Lincoln-Woodstock Chamber of Commerce. Innkeeper Nancy sums it up simply: “Its just the right thing to do.”
