Sunset Hill House Gives Away the Inn to Veterans
Sunset Hill House, a 28 room inn in Sugar Hill, has gone above and beyond this year in support of veterans. The Innkeepers, Lon and Nancy Henderson, have given away every room, free of charge, to service members on November 10th. And they even included a free, cooked to order breakfast.
“Its just the right thing to do” says Innkeeper Nancy. “they have given us so much, we’re honored to be able to give back just this little bit”. The ‘little bit’ is not insignificant, though, with the inn welcoming over 50 veterans and spouses, and donating well over $6000 in services.
The program sold out several months ago, so the innkeepers extended a half off sale for the weekend for veterans as well. “I wish we could give every veteran in America a free stay” said Nancy. They are working on an idea for that, hoping to extend the program year round to say thank you to more veterans.
Many of the veterans are using the opportunity at the historic inn to say thank you to, or enjoy a romantic getaway with, their spouses. Said one vet recently returned from Afghanistan “She’s done so much for me, and I haven’t been there much for her, I want this to be special”. Many rooms the veterans will enjoy include a jetted tub or fireplace or deck, and all have incredible views of the White or Green Mountains.
Innkeepers Lon and Nancy are both disabled veterans. Lon was an artilleryman with the 10th Mountain Division, serving in Somalia, before completing the Naval Postgraduate School as the honor graduate with his first Master’s degree. Nancy, a logistician, also served with the 10th Mountain Division in both Somalia and Haiti. They purchased Sunset Hill House in 2000, and have a strong record of community and charitable giving, topping over $10,000 each year. “I guess this year it will probably be a bit more than that” laughs Lon. “Its all good”.
