Wildlife Refuge
In 2002 we placed a conservation easement on more than 70 acres of land, including our historic golf course and wilderness lands, in partnership with the Ammonoosuc Conservation Trust and the NH Land and Community Heritage Investment Trust. This ensures that this land can never be developed; protecting the viewshed, as well as the wildlife there, forever. This wildlife refuge is home to a variety of birds (including pileated woodpeckers, hummingbirds, wild turkey and barred owls) and mammals. Moose, deer, black bears, coyotes, bobcats, fishercats, hares and smaller creatures have been spotted. Hiking trails throughout our forest and meadows invite you to take an easy walk.
Gardens
Our professionally maintained perennial gardens and wildflower fields feature native and non-invasive species. Maintained with virtually no chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides, they are eco-friendly and beautiful blooms that can show up on dinner plates. Our wedding garden is planted in blues and whites to match every bride, while our fun garden is a riot of orange lilies, blue delphinium, red poppies and monarda. We also have over fifty varieties of hosta.
In conjunction with the Adaptive Sports Partners of the North Country , Sunset Hill House is sponsoring an adaptive gardening project for folks with an assortment of challenges. Once a week, they gather for a complimentary breakfast provided by the inn before heading off to plant and tend the kitchen garden and prop up the droopy scarecrow. We are pleased to offer guests pesticide and herbicide free produce from this garden during the growing season.
